Storm Damage at St George's College
23/03/2010 16:34
The hail storm made holes in the roofs of South Wing causing significant damage to upper floor ceilings. The hailstones punctured some holes on the North Wing roof and these have been repaired today. The storm broke and removed some tiles from the Old Wing and neither Memorial Wing nor the Cottage escaped damage.
Hundreds of windows were broken and numerous cars were severely damaged. Trees have been stripped of their vegetation.
The clean-up operation began almost immediately. The gas was turned off and all electricity supplies were turned off except for the eastern wing of Old Wing. The kitchen staff has been able to serve meals uninterrupted.
The College put over 70 rooms out of bounds last night. The students have been very sensible and responsible in their response. They made arrangements amongst themselves and everyone was accommodated satisfactorily last night.
There will only be 28 students whose rooms will not be available this evening. The College will ensure that their needs are attended to. The interests of the students will remain a priority as we attempt to get the College fully operational as soon as possible.
The College was very fortunate to have a builder on site and he, together with our architect have done a wonderful job today. They have worked quickly, logically and very effectively to progress repairs. The students have been superb in assisting with the clean-up.
All of those many things that need to be attended to are being systematically attended to and significant progress has been made. However, making good the damage will take a great deal of time and effort.
