Dining Hall

The dining hall is substantially the same as when it was first built and it possesses a quality and atmosphere that is immediately apparent. Considerable effort is expended with food preparation to provide exceptional quality and choice for students. Dress: is informal except for formal dinners. As a matter of etiquette sleeveless shirts for men, hats and bandannas are not to be worn in the dining room at any time. No one is to enter the dining room with bare feet.

Meal Times

Meal times are displayed in the servery. Meals are not available outside these times, with the exception of cut lunches and late dinners.

Service

  • Collect cutlery on your way through the servery. Help yourself to salad. Return dirty dishes and cutlery to the servery.
  • No smoking in the dining hall or servery (or in any other part of the College)
  • Two pieces of fruit are provided for each student at most meals and may be taken out of the dining hall. NOTHING ELSE IS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE DINING HALL - INCLUDING FOOD [MILK], CROCKERY, CUTLERY, GLASSES, ETC. (By-Law2. 5.2.6b)
  • The servery procedure is different for formal dinners.

Cut Lunches

  • Cut lunches are provided if you are unable to attend the dining hall for lunch.
  • You make your own cut lunch during the breakfast serving period. Write your name on the cut lunch form on the day the cut lunch is chosen.
  • Cut lunches are not available on weekends, except by special arrangement.

Late Dinners

  • Late dinners are available from Monday to Friday but must be ordered by 2.30pm each day by filling in the late dinner form in the dining hall.
  • Late dinners can be collected up to 10pm.
  • After completing your meal, you must scrape your plate clean into the bin provided, wash your dishes and cutlery and stack them neatly.
  • Late dinners are not available on evenings when formal meals are held.
  • The privilege of the provision of late meals will be withdrawn unless these guidelines are respected.

Guests

  • You are welcome to invite impromptu guests to meals (except formal dinners).
  • Ask at the office for the cost per meal.
  • Buy a voucher from the office before the meal and present it at the servery, OR
  • Pay at the servery when the meal is collected.
  • Do not wait to be asked for payment. This embarrasses you and your guest.
  • If you have a non-resident guest who is not eating a meal or not intending to eat in the dining hall, please do not entertain him/her in the dining hall during a meal. This is to avoid any misunderstanding about payment for meals.

Formal Dinners

Formal dinners are an important part of College life. All members of the College dine together from time to time, often with invited guests who may address College members during or after the meal. The pattern of the evening is usually:

  • Drinks (sherry/soft drinks) in the foyer outside the Library, in the SCR, or JCR.
  • Dinner (preceded by Grace all standing) in the dining hall, for the whole College.
  • Coffee and cheese after dinner in the SCR or the JCR. Dress: Jacket and tie for men, equivalent for women.

Other

  • Students have access to the decision making process concerning food and menus via the Food Committee of the College Club.
  • The high table in the dining hall may only be used with the prior permission of the Warden. (By-Law 2. 5.2.11)
