St. George's College Principles

(Adopted by Council Resolution C26/87)

RESIDENCE

  1. The College will provide resident membership to students of The University of Western Australia, giving preference to those who have obtained sufficient passes to allow them to complete their degrees in the normal minimum time.
  2. The College should allocate remaining undergraduate places to first-year students, giving preference on the basis of academic qualifications and need.
  3. The College should allocate a number of places to postgraduate students.
  4. In applying these three principles, the College should seek to maintain a mix of disciplines, academic years, sexes, and ethnic, geographical and socio-economic backgrounds.
  5. The College should ensure that its accommodation and facilities are of a high standard, adequate to meet the many needs of the College community and to encourage continuing residence.
  6. The College should protect the architectural integrity of the chapel, original buildings, quadrangle and front gardens. New buildings and redevelopments should be in sympathy with the original architecture and presentation.
  7. The College should ensure that fees are set at a level which will provide adequate normal maintenance of the buildings, as well as covering annual operating costs.
  8. The College should develop a system of bursaries, so as to ensure that entry to the College is available to students from all economic backgrounds.

ACADEMIC

  1. To facilitate academic diversity and growth, the College should offer residence to visiting scholars and academic staff of The University of Western Australia. Visitors will be encouraged to interact informally with the student population, and to offer seminars and tutorials.
  2. The College should sponsor lectures, seminars, conferences and other academic activities to enrich academic life and enhance its reputation for excellence.
  3. The establishment of foundations, for academic purposes, will be actively encouraged.
  4. The College will employ qualified and competent tutorial staff, of whom a significant number will be resident, to provide a system of tutorials and academic counselling to complement the teaching programmes of The University of Western Australia.
  5. Offer prizes and scholarships to recognise academic excellence at the time of entry and in subsequent years of study.

MORAL AND SPIRITUAL

Noting that desirable moral and ethical qualities are recognised appropriately in the College constitution:

  1. Staff and tutor appointments should reflect a balanced representation of intellectual qualities and of moral and spiritual values.
  2. College members will be offered the opportunity to follow the Christian belief and to participate in Communion with Christ.
  3. The College will provide regular opportunities for worship and an environment for private prayer and meditation.
  4. Some opportunity will be provided for religious interaction with the Diocese of Perth and the wider community.
  5. The development of moral values by participation in community service will be encouraged.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL

  1. The social and cultural development of students will be encouraged by the provision of appropriate and adequate physical facilities.
  2. Events and programmes should be of predominantly student initiation and organisation. The College will facilitate supportive input from the Council, The Georgians and other agencies.
  3. Interaction with other University Colleges and student and community groups will be encouraged.
  4. An established code of discipline, acceptable to individual members and the collective community, will emphasise a high level of self-discipline by the student body.
