THE J M WOLFF SCHOLARSHIP

Dr Joachim Wolff was a lecturer in the Department of German in UWA, and a resident of St George's College for many years. Prior to his death in 1984, he had been planning to establish the "Charlotte Hoffler Music Scholarship" as a tribute to his mother who was an accomplished singer, still living at the time in Britain. However, he died before this was achieved. After Dr Wolff's death, his brother Rabbi William Wolff, provided a capital sum to establish a perpetual scholarship to be named "The J M Wolff Scholarship". Rabbi Wolff requested that the Scholarship be awarded to a music student because of his brother's deep interest in, and love of, classical music.

The St George's College Foundation (Incorporated) is the trustee of the Wolff Scholarship Fund. The Wolff Scholar is selected by a committee comprised of the Vice-Chancellor of the University or a Deputy Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Vice- Chancellor, the Warden of the College and another member of the College Council appointed by the Warden, and two members of the Department of Music at the University appointed by the Head of that Department.

  2. A person awarded the Scholarship is expected to give or organise at least two concerts during a three-year tenure of the Scholarship under the guidance and direction of the Department of Music. If the tenure of the Scholarship is for one or two years, the Scholar is expected to give or organise one concert.
  3. Subject to the availability of income from the Fund the annual value of the Scholarship is expected to be at least one third of the annual St George's College fee.
  4. The Trustee may, after receiving the advice of the Warden of St George's College and subject to the availability of income from the Fund, apply income of the Trust to meet part of the cost to the Scholarship holder of University fees or of books, equipment or instruments.
  5. The Selection Committee shall review the progress of the Scholarship holder annually and determine whether the tenure of the Scholarship should be continue or terminated.
  6. If the Scholarship holder fails to make satisfactory academic progress or ceases to be a member of St George's College, the Committee shall terminate the tenure of the Scholarship unless it determines otherwise for good cause with the consent of the Trustee.
