| St George's and You |
|
Name recognition and reputation are often factors when students are going through the college search process. One of the most important elements to consider is feel... sensing the right match for your needs. As with most things, one size does not fit all. Like buying clothes, you must "try colleges on", too. That's why it is important to visit all of the colleges available to you. Don't just go by what you've heard or read. Walk around and absorb what you see, hear, sense, and feel. As you walk around the college ask present students what they think about their academic home, what they enjoy about it and what might be done better? Is the experience what they expected or were there some surprises? St George's is unique in that we are a small residential college, with a beautiful formal front garden and Neo Gothic style architecture admired by all. We offer the best of both worlds: all of the advantages of being in the city of Perth as well as the advantages of being in a safe and secure residential environment close to the university and where help is only a phone call away. You will have the opportunity to expand the boundaries of your personal growth with both academic rigor and a close community bond with your fellow students that will last a lifetime. College life can be fantastic, but it isn't for everyone. And that decision is an Each year, over 170 individuals believe that St George's College is a good fit and submit applications for admission. As you embark on your college search, we invite you to visit us. We just might be a good fit for you too. St George's College Code of Conduct St George's College takes the view that students are role models in the community and as such should be aware that their behaviour at all times must be exemplary. Therefore all students should project a positive image within their University of choice and to the general public. The following are unacceptable:
Out of Bounds Areas All roofs, towers, parapets, and roof spaces are dangerous and are consequently strictly out of bounds. Unauthorised Activities Neither the College nor its insurers take any responsibility for death, injury, loss or damage which occurs as a result of, or in connection with, any unauthorised activity. Persons involved in such activities are liable to fines, suspension or expulsion. An unauthorised activity is any activity not authorised by the Warden. This means that any person or groups of persons arranging, contributing or taking part in any such activity will be personally responsible and therefore, individually liable for any actions for damage, injury, or death either directly or indirectly caused by or in the course of such activity, without the benefit of insurance. What are the bedrooms and study facilities like? Each student within the College is provided with furnished, single room accommodation, which is cleaned once a week by our staff. Some rooms have ensuite facilities and some are air-conditioned. We are continually upgrading the facilities at the College as our budget allows. Our returning students have first choice of rooms each year. All rooms have heating, an Internet port, telephone, bed, desk with a small bookshelf, chest of drawers and a wardrobe with hanging space. What other facilities are on the College campus? As a member of the College community you have access to facilities which include common rooms, a squash court, tennis/half basket ball court, BBQ area, library, dining hall, TV room, college canteen, laundry, computer room and chapel. Telephone and Internet connection Each room has its own telephone and Internet port. We are part of the University's system so our access to the Net is state of the art when it comes to logging on. Phone cards may be purchased from the office for outside calls. In addition, public phones for local, interstate and overseas calls are available.
Who chooses my room? The Senior Student allocates returning students to their rooms of choice first. Freshers are allocated the remaining rooms knowing that in years to come they choose where they want to stay. What do I need to bring to College? You need to bring all that is required for your courses at the University. Obviously you will provide all your clothing plus bedding, including your own pillow and blankets. Bring your own toiletries, including towels. Most students now bring their own computer and printer too. No cooking facilities are allowed in students rooms. Can I bring my car? There are 175 students, several tutors and guests living at the College. There are only 74 parking bays so parking is at a premium. If there are any bays left, first year country girls get first option. There is parking at the back of the College, though St. George's does not guarantee it. However, you are more than welcome to bring a bicycle to College and access to public transport is excellent. Safety and Security at the College We are continually upgrading our security with added lighting, security grills and safety talks to students. There hasn't been an incident at this College for many years and we want to keep it that way. If you ever feel concerned about your safety you can always ring the Duty Tutor, Sub Warden or Warden. Tutors There are currently several tutors at the College. As a Fresher, you will be assigned to a tutor. The tutor will be there to help, guide and encourage you mainly during your first year in the College. You will meet with the tutor both individually and as part of a group to share your experiences as a Fresher in both College and University life. Pastoral Care Going to university for the first time can be both exciting and challenging. This may even be the first time you have left home for more than a week or so. The College, in conjunction with the University's Student Services, works hard to cater for the needs of the whole student. There is general counselling available plus a careers centre, a learning skills centre, support for students with disabilities and medical conditions and much more. Within St George's College there is a Chaplain who is also a qualified counsellor and the tutors who will do all they can to help and support you. The Warden's door is always open to students who need to speak to him.
"Moving from a country town to study at UWA was very challenging. Living at College made everything easier. You form friendships with people of diverse backgrounds and as well as fostering interdependence, staying at St George's enables you to grow into an independent individual."
